This place was not on our list to visit, nor had we even heard about it until a family friend mentioned they had visited a few years ago, and said it was a “photographer’s dream”. That got us asking more, and before we knew it we had booked a driver and headed up north to Bedugul, in Northern Bali.
The “Resort” is in the Bedugul area of Northern Bali, and can be incorporated into your Northern Bali itinerary with stops at waterfalls and temples if you wish. Most Balinese drivers will know where the resort is, but will think you are crazy for going, as the place is believed to be haunted and no Balinese person will go inside the gates.

HOW TO GET TO BEDUGUL GHOST RESORT
Bedugul Ghost Resort is located in the town of Bedugul, and roughly a 2hour drive from Denpasar. Bali traffic can be unpredictable and the drive time can be hard to estimate.
There are multiple ways you can get to Bedugul Ghost Resort, either by scooter, private driver, taxi or using the Grab App (Uber of Asia). We have found that Grab has been a super affordable option, and helps us to haggle a reasonable price with a driver. However, as Grab isn’t available in some areas of Bali, The Bluebird Taxi App can be used to book a taxi online with a fair price.
The cost of a 2-hour car ride from the Denpasar would be around 300K IDR ($30 AUD), renting a scooter would take you back 50K IDR ($5 AUD) per day, or if you plan on hiring a driver for the day for a DIY tour then 500-600K IDR ($50-60 AUD) is a normal price for a full day trip.

STORY BEHIND BEDUGUL GHOST RESORT
The story goes that the President of Indonesia’s son, 20 years ago, began building a million-dollar resort in Bedugul. However, the president and his son were corrupt and the resort was being built illegally, without a license and off the people’s money. So, the building of the resort was ceased and has been abandoned ever since. Apparently multiple people died during the construction and no ceremony was held, so their spirits sill live inside. The president’s son went to jail after shooting his lawyer for his court case against this, in the head.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT BEDUGUL GHOST RESORT
The resort looks basically finished, without any furniture. But, since it has been abandoned, there is overgrown greenery everywhere, broken ceilings and puddles of water. There are amazing views of the Balinese mountains from the rooftop deck and you will basically be able to explore this gigantic resort by yourself, as this is not a tourist spot you will find on any tour! It cost us 10K IDR ($1 AUD) each to enter. You just pay the “guards” at the gate to let you in.
If you want a unique, undiscovered and mystical location to visit in Northern Bali, then this would make a great stop, even if you just want some epic and peaceful views all to yourself.
WHERE TO STAY IN NORTHERN BALI
We always recommend staying a few nights in Northern Bali to really experience all there is to see and do in this beautiful region. Northern Bali can often be confusing where to book your accommodation, as the area is so big. We personally stayed in the Bedugul area (which is a huge area), right next to Sekumpul Waterfall (one of our favourite homestays in Bali). The Bedugul area is popular for high-end resorts, but we always opt for homestays as, not only are they affordable, we get to live with a local family and know that our money is going straight into the local community by staying there. If you are looking for a coastal location, then Lovina is also an option with many different accommodation options and easily accessible to all the Northern Bali attractions, or Munduk which is situated up in the hills out of Bedugul township.

FINAL NOTE
Bedugul Ghost Resort is a unique and off the beaten path experience in Bali. Its not a typical attraction to do in Bali, yet that’s what makes it so fun and mysterious. If the resort itself doesn’t interest you, I bet the view of the Balinese mountains from the roof top deck will! The view is incredible! So, if you are up for something different, cheap, eerie yet beautiful, then this is your place!
