HOW TO GET TO KEP FROM PHU QUOC (VIETNAM)

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is an island in South Vietnam, near the Cambodian border, which makes travelling from Phu Quoc to Cambodia a popular tourist journey. We travelled from Phu Quoc to Kep, crossing the land border into Cambodia. Kep is the closest town to the Cambodian border and was a perfect first stop in Cambodia. Below we have detailed the steps on how to get from Phu Quoc to Kep without any hassles.

How to Get from Phu Quoc to Ha Tien

Antinho Tour Office at Antinho Hostel can organise ferry and bus packages to Cambodia, or other places in Vietnam. However, the packages were unavailable when we tried booking. For this reason, we only booked ferry tickets to Ha Tien with them, and organised our own way across the border. We paid 230K VND ($10 USD) for just the ferry to Ha Tien, departing at 11am.

Alternatively, you can book ferry tickets to Ha Tien online with Bookaway.com. There are ferries leaving 3 times a day, and the ferry journey is only 1 hour 15 minutes long.

Crossing the Cambodia-Vietnam Land Border from Ha Tien

It is important to note that the border is open between 6am-6pm. From the ferry in Ha Tien, we took a taxi to the border for 150K VND ($7 USD) as we had our luggage. A motorbike taxi to the border would have cost 50K VND ($2.20 USD). Once we arrived at the border, we were able to walk across.

Firstly, we needed to check out of Vietnam on the Vietnamese side. Make sure you have your Vietnam visa printed, or else you will need to pay extra for them to print it, or take a photo of it on your phone.

Then you can proceed across the border to the Cambodian side. It will cost $35 USD for a Visa on Arrival with a passport photo, or $37 USD without a passport photo. You will need to provide 2 passport photos, or pay for 2 to get taken there. It was a very smooth process.

Once you have received your visa, and got your passport stamped, you can then leave immigration and decide how you will make it to Kep (or your next destination in Cambodia).

From the Border to Kep

There are drivers on the Vietnam side of the border willing to take you to your destination in Cambodia. Alternatively, there will also be drivers waiting on the Cambodian side.

We took a driver to Kep for 400K VND ($17 USD) from the border. This is only a short 45-minute drive. Buses only come to the border in the morning (well, so we were told). Only buses to Phnom Penh were available at the border when we arrived. We are still not sure if there were any buses from the border to Kep.

Bus from Ha Tien to Kep

After further research, we have found a bus that leaves from Ha Tien at 6:30am, 11:00am and 12pm for $9 USD. The bus company is called Bien Ha Tien Travel, but travels through a different land border. It would be a much more affordable travel option from the ferry in Ha Tien to Kep.

Travel Packages from Phu Quoc to Kep

In Phu Quoc you will find that some tour companies offer packages to get from Phu Quoc to Kep. If you are going to book a package, make sure to organise it at least a couple of days in advance. Packages include ferry tickets and bus transfers over the border and to your town of choice. Unfortunately, we left it until the last minute and weren't able to book a package, meaning we were left to find our own transfers and walk over the border.

After our experience, we found that it would have been cheaper to book a Phu Quoc to Kep package through Antinho Tourism than doing it on our own. The below packages are what they provide:

Departure Time Cost
Line 17am$19 USD
Line 28:20 am$29 USD
Line 310:20 am$22 USD
Line 412pm$24 USD

They only had line 1 and 2 options available sometimes line 3 and 4 aren't available and you need to book the day before.
